Reach vs. OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads App for Shopify: Why Reach Wins on Tracking (2026)
OpenAI's own ChatGPT Ads app is a quick way to launch a campaign. But launching is the easy part. Knowing what your ads actually sell is where Reach wins, and here is the side-by-side that shows it.
“Reach vs. OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads App for Shopify: Why Reach Wins on Tracking (2026)”
The short version
- OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify is a launch tool. It is free, and it connects your ad account, syncs your catalog and builds product ads without leaving Shopify.
- Reach is built for what comes after launch: knowing what your ads actually sell. Server-side tracking you can watch working, revenue and orders from your real Shopify orders, ROAS inside Shopify, and a product feed checked against every OpenAI rule.
- Side by side, Reach wins 7 of the 9 things we compare. OpenAI's app wins on price and on creating campaigns inside Shopify.
- The setup we recommend: create campaigns in ChatGPT Ads Manager, and let Reach own your tracking and your feed. Keep one tracking app per Pixel ID so no sale is counted twice.
- Full disclosure: I build Reach. Every claim about OpenAI's app comes from its public App Store listing or OpenAI's own documentation, linked at the end, so you can check them.
Since OpenAI launched its own ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify, merchants keep asking me the same thing: do I still need Reach? My answer: if you only want to get a first campaign live, OpenAI's app does that well. If you are spending real money and need to know whether it pays back, that is exactly the job Reach was built for, and the job OpenAI's app does not try to do.
What is OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify?
ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's own app on the Shopify App Store, free to install, announced in mid-September 2026 for US merchants first, with other ChatGPT Ads markets to follow. According to its listing, it lets you connect or create a ChatGPT ad account from Shopify, sync your catalog to ChatGPT Ads Manager, create product ads and campaigns from your catalog, run campaigns "using a Shopify pixel and conversion events," and see spend, click-through rate, conversions and cost per acquisition in Shopify.
That is a good launch experience. What it does not give you is a view of your ads from your store's side: which real orders they produced, which products sold, and whether your tracking is actually delivering.
What is Reach?
Reach is two Shopify apps built only for ChatGPT Ads, used by merchants across the US, Europe and beyond:
- OpenAI Ads & ChatGPT Ads Pixel sends every purchase, checkout, add to cart, product view and page view to OpenAI's Conversions API server-side, then shows you what your ChatGPT Ads sold: revenue, orders, top products and ROAS, from your real Shopify orders. Setup takes about 30 seconds: paste your Pixel ID and Conversions API key, and the app checks both before saving.
- Product Feed for ChatGPT Ads turns every variant into a correctly formatted feed row, checks each one against OpenAI's rules before it ships, and re-syncs after you change your catalog.

Where OpenAI's app wins
Two places, and they are real. It is free, and it lets you build a campaign from your catalog without opening Ads Manager. If you have never run ChatGPT Ads and want to test the channel this afternoon, it is the fastest start.
Where Reach wins
1. You see what your ads actually sell
Clicks and CPA tell you what the ad did. Reach tells you what your store got: the revenue and orders from shoppers who clicked a ChatGPT ad, which products they bought, and what share of your sales the channel drives, all from your real Shopify orders. On a channel this new, that is the number that tells you whether to keep spending, scale, or stop.
2. Tracking you can watch working
Reach delivers every event to OpenAI's Conversions API from our servers instead of relying only on a script in the shopper's browser, and reuses the same event ID on every retry so a retry never counts a sale twice. It adds hashed customer details (email, phone, name) and order location so more of your sales match to the ads that drove them. And the live events dashboard shows events arriving, and Reach flags a broken key or Pixel ID, so you do not find out weeks later that conversions stopped.
3. A second opinion that is not the seller's
OpenAI sells the ad and reports the results. That is normal for any ad platform, and since September 30, 2026, Ads Manager totals include one-day view-through conversions by default, so a sale can be counted for an ad the shopper saw but never clicked. Reach measures from your side instead: orders in your store from shoppers who clicked. When the two numbers differ, you finally know how much of the reported result you can see landing in your store.
4. A feed that does not silently drop products
Catalog sync only helps if the products actually arrive. Product Feed for ChatGPT Ads checks every row against OpenAI's rules before upload (missing images, missing prices, text that is too long), shows a delivery history of what was sent and what needs fixing, and lets you choose exactly which products go into ads.
5. Every market, and a founder who answers
Reach works in any market where you can run ChatGPT Ads, not only the US. And when something looks off, you email me, the founder, not a ticket queue. Our Pixel app is rated 4.6 on the Shopify App Store (32 reviews as of October 25, 2026). One merchant in Switzerland put it simply: "Excellent and very responsive support by the founder himself."
Can I use Reach and OpenAI's app together?
Yes, with one rule: only one app should send conversion events for each Pixel ID. OpenAI removes a duplicate only when two events share the same Pixel ID, event name and event ID. Today, OpenAI's app and Reach each send their own purchase event for the same order with different event IDs, so running both on one Pixel ID counts every sale twice and inflates your conversions, CPA and ROAS.
The clean setup we recommend: create and manage campaigns in ChatGPT Ads Manager, and let Reach own your tracking and your feed. If you already run OpenAI's app and want Reach's tracking, email me before you install and I will check your setup so nothing is counted twice.
Our verdict
- Just testing the channel? OpenAI's free app gets a first campaign live quickly.
- Spending real budget and need to know if it pays back? Reach. Revenue from real orders, ROAS in Shopify, tracking you can see working, and a feed you control.
- Selling outside the US? Reach works in your market today.
If you plan to stay on ChatGPT Ads, you want to be in the second group, because "the ad got clicks" is not the answer you need. "The ad made money" is. That is the question Reach answers.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better for Shopify, Reach or OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads app?
It depends on the job. OpenAI's free app is better for launching a first campaign from inside Shopify. Reach is better for knowing what your ads sell: server-side tracking you can watch working, revenue and orders from your real Shopify orders, ROAS in Shopify, and a product feed checked against every OpenAI rule. In our side-by-side, Reach wins 7 of 9 categories; OpenAI's app wins on price and campaign creation.
Does OpenAI have an official Shopify app for ChatGPT Ads?
Yes. ChatGPT Ads, published by OpenAI on the Shopify App Store, is free to install. It connects or creates your ad account, syncs your catalog, builds product ads and campaigns, and sets up conversion measurement with a Shopify pixel. OpenAI launched it for US merchants first in September 2026.
Do I still need Reach if I use OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads app?
If you want to know what your ads actually sell, yes. OpenAI's app reports spend, clicks, conversions and CPA. Reach adds the store-side view: revenue, orders, top products and ROAS from your real Shopify orders, a live events dashboard, and a feed you control.
Can I run Reach and OpenAI's app on the same Pixel ID?
Not as two senders. Both send their own purchase event for the same order with different event IDs, so OpenAI counts the sale twice. Use one app for conversion events per Pixel ID. Our recommended setup is campaigns in ChatGPT Ads Manager and Reach for tracking and your feed.
Is Reach free?
Reach's Pixel app has a free plan with server-side tracking, the live events dashboard and hashed customer data for matching. Pro ($29/month or $290/year, with a 7-day free trial) adds revenue and orders from ChatGPT Ads, top products, ROAS and ad spend, and the channel's share of store sales.
Why do Reach and Ads Manager show different numbers?
They answer different questions. Ads Manager reports the conversions OpenAI attributes, including one-day view-through by default since September 30, 2026. Reach reports orders in your Shopify store from shoppers who clicked a ChatGPT ad. The gap shows how much of the reported result you can see in your own store.
